There hadn’t been any more dreams about Griffin, just his voice calling her. But then, what was the point in dreaming? If she wanted to see him again, she’d need to make it become a reality, and not count on dreams.

She got out of her bed and saw Larzen and Mauro sleeping, but no Riadne.

The redhead was outside, holding the book with the Solana potions, running her hand over it, her face wistful. There was sadness there. Zora sighed. She and Mauro had agreed that they had to tell Riadne the truth, but now she was second-guessing it.

She raised her eyes and gave Zora a thin smile.

“Reading?” Zora sat by her.

She looked at the book. “Wing cake.” She had a bitter chuckle. “Is it too much to hope that somehow our solution could have been in a book all this time? Or is it ironic that it could be so simple?”

“You’re worried about your brother,” Zora said.

“And myself too. Maybe I’m wondering what’s going to happen.” Riadne bit her lip, then looked away, at the ocean, her eyes lost.

Zora was wondering if Riadne would ask again about the truth balsam, give her an opening to mention it, but she didn’t. Zora would need to bring up the truth. She took a deep breath, then said, “I… made the potion you asked me.”

“Hum. Yes, maybe it could make a difference.” Riadne didn’t sound interested.

“I… it wasn’t my fault,” Zora blurted. “It was an accident. It was Mauro, but he didn’t know you were going to drink it—”

Riadne frowned. “Say it.”

“It wasn’t on purpose, but… there was some of the truth balsam in the wine yesterday.”

The redhead froze and stared at Zora. “In the wine?”

“Which you drank.” Zora bit her lip.

“What?” Riadne got up and put her hands on her head. “You know what it means?”

That Zora was a horrible person? But she just shook her head.

“I could be misunderstanding this book. It’s over four hundred years old. Words change. Meanings might have changed. What you gave me was likely some kind of…” She paused. “Stupid decision potion.”

“It could be the truth.”

Riadne rolled her eyes. “No.” She chuckled. “Definitely not.”

“I’m sorry.”

She waved a hand. “It was my idea, in a way. I’m sure you meant well.” Still, Riadne’s voice was tight. She was angry.

“Did something bad happen? Between you and Larzen?”

The false princess shook her head. “Nothing happened. Nothing important, at least.”

“Should I tell Larzen about the potion?”

“Oh yes, that will be wonderful.” Her tone was sarcastic. “Then he’ll think I forced him like I did with his baby brother.”

“Nobody said that.”

“Say whatever you want.” Riadne picked up the book and walked away.

Zora had no doubt that the false princess and Larzen had gotten together the previous night. In fact, Riadne had admitted as much. What she didn’t understand was why all of a sudden it seemed like a problem. Perhaps it had been the potion that made it all wrong somehow. Damn Mauro. And Riadne. And everyone.

But then, the important thing was getting to Rock Island.
